Maundy Thursday: Whole-life service

A Journey Through Holy Week

Catch up on the daily reflections sent to our Holy Week mailing list.

On the night before his crucifixion, Jesus gathered with his closest friends for a simple meal. In John 13:1, we read that ‘having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.’

Out of this deep, unshakeable love, Jesus did something unexpected: he knelt down and washed his disciples’ feet. Washing feet was the work of a servant – ordinary, humble, common and overlooked – but Jesus chose to do it.

He took the lowest place, not out of obligation, but because he wholly loved them. In doing so, he revealed the heart of God, who bends low in humility though seated high in majesty. Knowing exactly who he was and the authority he carried, Jesus did not desire to command attention, but to make his love known and to inspire compassion.

John 13:15–17 reads: ‘I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.’

In gentleness and humility, Jesus revealed the hope of a Kingdom where the last would be first, and the first would be last.

When Jesus washed the disciples’ feet, he wasn’t simply performing a symbolic act – he was teaching them a way of life. He was showing them what real greatness looks like in the Kingdom of God: a posture of self‑giving surrender that doesn’t grasp hold of power but is devoted to others in love.

Hope for our whole lives

This kind of service is filled to the brim with hope. It trusts that even small acts of great love, offered in humility, can soften hardened hearts. It knows that, when we pour our whole selves out in love, God will fill us again.

Whose feet is Jesus inviting you to kneel at today? How is he inviting you to embody humble, hope-filled, whole-life service? Perhaps there is someone you find difficult to serve or a response you’d rather avoid. Bring this honestly before Jesus: ‘Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them’ (John 13:17).

With God, nothing is wasted – every choice, sacrifice and opportunity you take to serve becomes part of the hope he is building in the world.

Let us pray

Lord, help me to remember you well. Teach me to follow your example of humble service. Give me a heart that is willing to serve in selfless love, and hands that are ready to reveal your hope in the world. Make me more like you, today and every day.
