In 2021, at the request of the then Territorial Commander, Commissioner Anthony Cotterill, a Territorial Racial Inclusion Working Group was formed to help The Salvation Army take practical steps to address racial injustice and discrimination within our movement.
Through listening to honest and sometimes painful stories, including those of Salvationists who have felt ignored, excluded, or mistreated because of their ethnicity, the working group recognised both the harm experienced by individuals and the ways in which racism can operate unintentionally or unconsciously within church life.
As part of this work, a Race Inclusion video course and supporting resources were commissioned. The course combines short teaching input with interviews from Salvationists sharing their lived experiences, creating space for reflection, discussion, and growth. It is designed to help local corps begin, or continue a journey towards becoming more intentionally welcoming and inclusive communities.
This journey is hopeful and rooted in our faith, but it may also feel uncomfortable at times. It invites us to reflect honestly on our assumptions, biases, and habits, and to consider how we might need to step beyond what feels familiar. Scripture reminds us that God’s kingdom is a restored family not defined by ethnicity, culture, gender, or background, but by love, justice, reconciliation, and grace.
The Race Inclusion course offers a gentle but intentional starting point, one in which we will be able to encourage one another to learn, to listen, and to move forward together as one corps family.
For corps leader: If you’d like to explore whether this course could work in your corps, the full course guide and access to the video resources are available by emailing racial.inclusion@salvationarmy.org.uk
